But over these last four decades—especially during the last decade—GC/MS technology has increasingly transformed in terms of novel applications which identify trace elements in materials previously thought to be disintegrated beyond identification, while high-speed GC/MS is contextualized in terms of application and equipment specifications. This article reflects upon the traditional forensic uses of GC/MS in light of new developments in cutting-edge science, but instead reflects its origin in the successful combination of two considerably older and well-tested processes. The two processes have now been used in conjunction for nearly 40 years. But over these last four decades—especially during the last decade—GC/MS technology has increasingly transformed in terms of application and equipment specifications. This article reflects upon the traditional forensic uses of GC/MS in light of new GC/MS manifestations and applications.
